Biography:

Juan Fernando received his Bachelor’s Degree from St. Ignacio College and his DDS degree in 1992 from Javeriana University School of Dentistry in Bogota. He has served as a Member of the University of Kentucky Faculty in Oral Medicine, Diagnosis and Radiology from 2002 to 2010. As a result of his interest in public health, he completed a Residency program in Dental Public Health (Baylor College of Dentistry, 2006), a Master’s in Public Health, MPH (University of Kentucky, 2007), and a Doctoral Degree in Public Health, Dr PH (University of Kentucky, 2011). In July of 2014, he accepted a faculty position as an Associate Professor in Pediatric Dentistry at Indiana University in Indianapolis, Indiana. He is an active member of the American Academy of Oral Medicine, American Medical Association, Hispanic Dental Association, American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, American Association of Public Health Dentistry, International Association of Dental Research, International Association of Dento‐Maxillo‐Facial Radiology, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and American Dental Association. He is a Reviewer for Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology and Endodontology, Oral Diseases, Dento Maxillo Facial Radiology, Journal of Dental Research and Oncology. He is an author of book (Oral Medicine in the Dental Practice, 2002), participated as a chapter author in 8 books, and authored 26 manuscripts published in peer‐review journals. Finally, he has been invited to give 87 lectures nationally and 27 internationally (11 different countries).

This course presents principles of diagnosis and treatment of common oral medicine conditions in children. The program will include diseases in the oral cavity that the general practitioner and pediatric dentist will see in a busy dental practice including recurrent aphthous stomatitis, herpes, papilloma, to mention some. Additionally, the course will cover the most important aspects of oral radiology in children including radiation safety issues, digital radiology and a review of the most common radiographic entities in children. The presentation wills emphasis in the chronological order of the construction of the differential diagnosis. Additionally, the most common systemic pathologies that affect children will be reviewed as well as the current treatment protocols. The main objectives of this presentation are: 1. Distinguishing Entities: The dentist will be competent in distinguishing common oral medicine conditions that will encounter in the daily practice and will learn the updated treatment. 2. Use Diagnostic Tools: The dentist will be able to apply correctly the different diagnostic tools available for the most common oral medicine conditions in children. 3. Recognize Systemic Conditions: At the end of the course, the dentist will be able to recognize systemic conditions that have an impact in the dental practice. For example, oral anticoagulation, diabetes, and asthma just to mention some. 4. Treatment Protocols: The dentist will be competent to apply to most current treatment protocols base on the best evidence available to the most common oral medicine conditions.
